NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART BOILER FOR PRESCO

In August 2005 work started on the manufacturing of a new 30 tonnes of steam per hour boiler. The manufacturer is the Belgian company Vyncke, which has a strong reputation for building boilers for the palm oil industry.

Boilers used in the palm oil production process are different from boilers seen in other industries in that they burn process waste products to heat water to produce steam. The main waste products used are fruit fibre and palm kernel shells, but the new boiler will also be able to burn shredded empty bunches.

Presco’s new boiler, which will be installed on site in the second half of 2006, will mean that there is sufficient steam to be able to drive a steam turbine. To this end Presco is planning to install a 2.5 MW turbine. A turbine of this output will eliminate the need to run diesel generators, which, with a threefold increase in the price of fuel in Nigeria in the last two years, are costing more and more to run.
